So, what causes the wind noises?

Reasons behind Wind Noise

When a vehicle moves, it pushes air away with its front surface pushing against the air. The push is in all directions – up, down, left and right. Because of this push, the side and back surfaces are in the low air pressure zones.

At high speeds, the interior air pressure becomes higher in comparison to the car’s exterior. As the speed increases, the pressure difference increases. The car’s air conditioning system also adds to the interior air pressure.

Now, as the air pressure increases, it will try to escape the car through the available exits. The manufacturers provide designated exits for this purpose. The pressure vents are placed strategically, away from the people. Why?

As the air flows through those vents, they create noise. And to prevent air from escaping, all the other openings are sealed. These seals on doors, windows and trunk openings prevent the air from escaping, and thus reduces the wind noise. The type of seal depends on its position, and they either restrict the passage of air or stop it completely.

Ways to stop Wind Noise

When you experience an unwanted wind noise, you can be sure of an opening from where the high-pressure air is passing. When there is an opening in the passenger area itself, a large volume of air tries to pass through that small space instead of the designated vents.

As the speed of the car increases, the pitch of the noise gets higher, which causes discomfort. Not repairing it may cause the hole to widen thus causing damage to the car’s body. However, with a bigger hole, the pitch of noise too decreases. But, better to get it repaired. Here are some of the ways –

• Replace the rubber seals –

If you find the rubber seals on the doors and windows damaged, replace them with new ones. Even the smallest gap can be the cause of a lot of noise. Replacing all of them, will soundproof the car against the wind noise and will significantly raise the comfort level. To keep your weather strips like new, keep them lubricated with silicone paste.

• Check the weather stripping –

Holes in the weather stripping on doors and windows can also be a cause of the abnormal noise levels. Is the weather stripping in good condition, aligned properly and secured?

• Check the door for deformities –

Even a small deformity can leave the door not properly closed. It results in an opening, thus causing wind noise. Is the door properly aligned or has the wind caught it and bent the hinges?

• Clear the door drain holes –

Clearing the door drain holes results in proper air circulation and reduction in the noise levels. It also helps to release water. You can clear debris from the door drains easily with weed eater line.

• Body damage, check exterior for any damaged, loose or missing trim.

• Use automotive caulk for sealing –

You can use automotive caulk around the permanently sealed windows. With time, some of the sealants may have come off and might be the cause of those increased decibels. The application can be somewhat difficult, so we suggest using masking tape and tape the area off, then take a test drive to see if that solves the problem..
